Is there any way to link directly to an application from the Shortcut ("Favorites") screen?  I can create a shortcut to the "Applications" folder or to the "Games" folder, but I can't seem to link directly to, say, OperaMini or Gmail.

Not that I'm aware of...  Closest you get it the Application or Games list, as you have said.
