I figured out how to load applications via memory card!
I'm on AT&T.  Rogers may or may not allow you to load applications this way.

Note: "Context menu button" = the rectangle with horizontal lines through it, that appears on the upper-right hand corner of some screens.

Note2: .jad files with a MIDlet-Install-Notify line may use Internet. If you have pay-per-use data, you may want to try removing the MIDlet-Install-Notify line to avoid data usage - or just install the .jar and not the .jad

1. Obtain the .jar file (and .jad file, if possible) for the application you want to load.

2. Open the .jad file (if you have one) and check the MIDlet-Jar-URL line.  It should NOT have a http://web.site.address/folder/folder2/etc at the beginning.  If it does, remove everything except the .jar file name.
For example (this is for Google Maps), change
MIDlet-Jar-URL: http://m.google.com/maps/download/binaries/L1/2.3.2/maps_m2.jar
to
MIDlet-Jar-URL: maps_m2.jar

2. Copy the .jar (and .jad if you have it) file to the memory card via your PC (use a MicroSD card reader, or if you have a USB cable, connect the phone to the PC in Mass Storage mode).

3.  From the Home screen, tap the Application button (box with 4 dots).

4. Tap the Folder tab.

5. Tap More.

6. Tap Other Files.
A list of files will appear here.  This seems to be a list of all the files the phone doesn't "know" about.
NOTE: You will likely see .jad and .jar files here with numbered names, like 020.jad and 020.jar, etc.  DO NOT DELETE these!  These are the applications that you have copied to your memory card.  If you delete these, the associated application won't work anymore and you will need to reload it.

7. Tap the .jad or .jar file you want to install.  Once you go through the confirmation screens, it will be installed TO YOUR PHONE.  NOTE: You may need to copy/move the .jad and .jar files to phone memory first.

8. If you want, go to Games or Applications and tap the Context menu button and tap Copy to or Move to if you want to move or copy the application to the memory card.  Yes, I KNOW it is ALREADY on the memory card, but if you don't do it this way, it's not somewhere the phone knows how to access it.

9. To clean up the files you used to install the app, go back to Other Files, then tap the Context menu button, tap Delete, then choose the file(s) to delete.

Hope that helps folks!

I checked a couple of jad and jar files that I could not get to work after transfering them to my card. They don't have any URL info except for the file name. Still can't get any action from tapping on any jad or jar files that I transfer to my Rogers phone.

Yeah, I believe Rogers doesn't allow loading apps that aren't directly from Rogers. AT&T allows loading apps from elsewhere, but the Java Security is locked as the signing gets farther from AT&T/Manufacturer.

Actually I have been able to install quite a few j2me apps by downloading them directly to the phone, after failing to find any way to get the phone to open the exact same files transferred  to the memory card via the USB or bluetooth. I don't know how much data I have used yet, but for the first month of a new data plan, Rogers gives you unlimited data. I guess I'll install, install, install,... and hope for a solution for the future.

Good to know, so Rogers allows OTA loading, but not via Bluetooth or otherwise?

Actually AT&T normally only allows OTA too, though it seems I have found the way around that.

mrblack, please see forum rule...

Bitpim has no idea how to talk to the Xenon, plus can't put stuff back onto the phone - everything gets directed back to Others or Other Files.

The trick to create a folder called Others and Other Files doesn't work either.

Pragmaticjack is correct.

Over The Air works fine with the Rogers' phone GR500R (A black Xenon). However, if you download & run an app like this one http://wap.mgmaps.com/mgmaps_lg-signed.jad Then you can only run it immediately after it's downloaded because this app is not be visible on the phone or card anywhere afterwards.

So, you CAN run some apps like that touch screen map app that I linked above, however I would be careful when saving it to your phone. Since apps cannot be seen, and the phone cannot be browsed; the app therefore cannot be deleted. You'd be much safer in saving them to your flash card, otherwise a lack of capacity may ensue.

If you're saving to your phone instead of the card, then my advice is:
1. Take note of the file size prior to downloading
2. Overwrite the file that already exists on the phone to avoid redundancy.
3. DO NOT download copious amounts of apps.

P.S.
I can't wait until we can browse the contents of this phone. Many of the software restrictions are complete nonsense. It's the little things that bother me. For example, what is so wrong about wanting to change the message alert sound to something that doesn't exist on their predetermined list?!
This phone needs to be set hacked!
Not to promote illegitimacy, not to disrespect LG, but to set the phone free and unleash its potential.

daze_of_the_weak, I'd like to start off by saying thank you for pointing me to a newer version of Mobile GMaps. It works and looks better, and it no longer has the navigational pad (I still can't quite figure out that one myself).

That being said, I have a black rogers Xenon and I simply typed the URL you mentioned into the onboard browser. I waited a moment, the download started, I confirmed the signed version to update and was presented with
'Where do you want to save the file' with the options of phone and memory card.
I have been doing this all along. My games and apps folders are quite loaded and take a few seconds to open. All programs are stored as numbered .jad and .jar files in a directory on the MicroSD card.

I agree that more can be done with a hacked anything, however, I am quite content with my loaded Xenon and Rogers $9.99 data plan keeping me connected and able to download until my heart is content.

I had once thought that the apps that are downloaded cannot be found anywhere on the phone.
I was wrong. This is because I was looking for them on the flash card, and under applications,
(where logically they should be). However after downloading apps from various websites, like gmail or map apps, I found they were all listed in the games menu. Thanks to kgb for pointing this out.

As strange as it is to find them there, I'm still thankful that they are listed somewhere on the phone.
All I have to do now is pin them to the Favourites menu for convenience.

Speaking of the Favourites menu, is there a way to remove the "Shop" and "Tones & More" shortcuts so that there is more room for the other apps I've downloaded?
