For AT&T Xenons...
Top Menu>Settings>More>Software Update>Check for Update

But no software updates appear to be available from the AT&T DM server.

It's quite possible.  My first Xenon was 1.0f, and my replacement was 1.0j.

I have a completely unrelated question.

I know you are in the US, you mention at&t, but reading your posts, it seems English may not be your first language?
I only ask because I frequent some 'world-wide' forums and the typing is similar.

You should post what firmware you have. I was going to but then I realized I can't see that. My hardware is version 1.0 though. :-)

LG and AT&T are quiet.  So no idea.  It's not like they give out release notes...

In theory you could change firmware, but it would require a device that can write firmware to the Xenon (like an Octopus box or SETool box).

AT&T Xenons will pull AT&T firmware, Rogers Xenons will pull Rogers firmware, etc.  I'm not sure if the connection requires you to be actively on the provider's network either.  IOW, I don't know whether an unlocked AT&T-branded Xenon with a Rogers SIM on the Rogers network will pull AT&T firmware, fail, or pull the Rogers firmware.

I have an AT&T Xenon which is now operating quite well using a different SIM card on a non-affiliated non-AT&T cellphone network outside of North America.  I am happy with the phone, except for its inability to easily sync contact and calendar information directly with my computer via USB or Bluetooth connection.

Because the sync function is critical for my work, I will soon be forced to "junk" the phone and purchase a new one if I can't get it working.

If this happens, I will certainly choose a different combination of brands which will provide adequate support from its manufacturer (LG) and distribution group (AT&T) for problems such as this. I have been sorely disappointed with both AT&T and LG for their lack of engagement in addressing this issue.

If I could somehow replace the AT&T firmware with the Rogers firmware (which I believe works with PC Suite), I think it would get me up to full functionality.

Can someone post or send me the technical details for how they think it could be done?  Or any other "fixes" that would restore the sync function?  I would be happy to risk "bricking" my phone just to try.......

There are two problems:
1. You would need to obtain the Rogers firmware.  I haven't seen GR500 firmware out and about, especially since they're all sold through carriers, so it's not like you can easily find generic/unbranded firmware for it.

2. You'd need a way to flash the device.  This usually requires a special hardware box that supports the phone, as there is a type of encryption that secures the phone from outside tampering.
That flashing hardware alone would cost more than a new phone.  There are likely cell phone shops that already have the hardware, so maybe you could pay someone to do it for you.

But overall... it's not worth the time/effort for a sub-$100 phone.

AT&T doesn't provide PC Suite with their Xenons, and it doesn't work, even if you have it.  In fact, the AT&T firmware seems crippled so PC Suite *can't* talk to it.  I suspect AT&T did this on purpose.  You can access the SIM phonebook, but communicating for on-phone stuff seems to time out after a few attempts.  You can pull some stuff from the modem AT commands and OBEX but not enough so far.

You may have better luck finding someone with a Fido/Rogers/Telstra GR500 that will trade you.

Unless we manage to find a way to overwrite files in the filesystem... but a number of people have been trying that for over a year now and nobody has succeeded.

I have two xenons that I purchased on the same date. One updated to software version GR500-V10o-May-13-2010-ATT-US just the other day and the other one won't allow me to update it. Its stuck on GR500-V10j-Jul-20-2009-ATT-US. I don't understand why.

Sometimes it has trouble connecting to the DM server.

You could try swapping SIMs and trying the update - or just try it later.
