Are there any reasons to unlock the phone besides to change wireless providers?  Does it change availability of programs, will the GPS work?

Unlocking simply allows you to use the phone on other carriers.

Unlocking does not change any of the permissions, restrictions or capabilities of the phone.

To remove restrictions, you need access to change the policy file in the filesystem.  Currently we cannot do this as we cannot write to the filesystem.

Debranding removes the provider-specific features and limitations, putting the phone in its generic state.  We cannot do this either, as writing the firmware requires write access to the filesystem again.

Hey, I'm with Rogers, Black, Lg Xenon and I understand the basics behind  Unlocking a Phone. I used to have a 2G Iphone and i did it with it but its to different companies and phones. When I try to get the code to unlock it, it gives me a 17 digit code?? When i try it first of all it says (16) DIGIT and the code is 17 digits long so you cant fill it in? I Would like to know what to do now?? If anyone knows please help me. I dont think im the only one with this problem... cuz if i am, im gonna cry, and i wouldnt like that. ok well i dont think i would but can someone help me with this problem. Thanks Ahead  Cheesy

Rogers does not like to provide the Sim subsidy unlock code for their customers. They believe if you buy there phone, you use their service. Stupid company.

Well, to be fair, the main reason why the carriers don't like to unlock carrier-branded phones is because they're subsidizing part of the phone's cost.  If you don't stay on their network, they essentially make no money off of you and have paid for part of your phone.

It's kind of like if your employer pays for you to take continuing education classes.  Generally they will make you sign something that says if you cease employment within some timeframe, then you will repay the money they paid toward your education.

However, what I don't quite understand is how we can have $300 netbooks and phones that are produced in much higher volumes have $300+ MSRPs...

I know you have to be with AT&T for more than six months for them to unlock your phone. Since I have Pay As You Go, I simply told them my old SIM card expired (which is true) and they didn't ask anymore questions. Just a handy tips for those of you who want to unlock it on Go Phone.

The only problem with that logic Brandon is that in order to get the phone at a subsidized price, you have to agree to a 2yr contract. And if you break that contract their are fees designed to help them recoup the cost of the phone. So there is no real reason for the companies to not allow you to unlock the phone other than them being jerks.

As for why the MSRP on something like the Xenon is $299 and you can get a netbook for... $299. The only answer I have is that the size of the component in the phone make them cost more. But that is a weak argument.

That is a good point.  The subsidized equipment price is attached to having a contract.

I guess the carrier-locking is mostly a deterrent.
