I'm using the "regular" Google Maps with the attached JAD, which ought to grab the binary from Google's site, assuming you download the JAD from somewhere that uses the right MIME type.  MMS-ing to your phone might work too.

Since this is the non-touchscreen version, you can't tap-and-drag the map, and touchscreen input only works in certain locations (limited to the native touchscreen functions, which is why UseNativeCommands is set true)
Use the Arrow keys to scroll the map and navigate menus
Vol Up/Down to zoom out/in
Enter to "click" the map or select from menus (or you can tap the left/right soft buttons)
Sym or Backspace to back out (or you can tap the appropriate soft button)

I found the touchscreen version floating around, but since it's just a JAR without a JAD, there's no signature and it prompts on every network access, which is very, very, annoying - and the only functional difference between it and my non-touch configuration is the touchscreen version can tap-and-drag on the map and do menu selections via touchscreen.

Note: This is a good example of how a Java Mobile (J2ME) app can use parameters for additional key mapping.  For example, notice the SelectKey, LeftSoftKey, RightSoftKey, etc parameters.  I changed the following mappings in the JAD above so...
Vol Up/Down buttons zoom
Enter is Select
Backspace is Back
Sym is Clear
Left/Right soft keys are mapped properly
Send (green phone) key is Talk, though I have not seen what the Talk function is used for yet.

If you want, you can set UseNativeMenus to true and you will be able to tap the menu selections.  The problem is, the menus get drawn bigger using the native menu, which involves way more scrolling, so I opted for losing the touch and having the menus fit on the screen better.

Setting UseNativeCommands to False will have the app draw the bottom commands (Menu, Close/Select, etc) but since the touchscreen input doesn't work, you can't actually trigger them.

I'm torn between this and mobile Gmaps. Gmaps navigates like you would expect Google maps to, but it doesn't have access to Googles maps anymore. Still a nice app.

Did either of you happen to get the GPS functionality to work on either Google maps or mobile Gmaps?

If so, would you mind sharing for the rest how you went about doing so?

The latest Google Maps now shows some location numbers, but My Location still does not function for me.

Hi folks .
I am new to this forum , but I own the new LG Arena for 5 weeks. It is similar to the Xenon . I have Google maps, Mgmaps ,and Sportypal loaded ,all with full GPS capabilty . I have a touchscreen version of Google maps that I got from the Samsung Eternity forum that allows full acces to the gps . If anyone is interested , I will post the steps needed to access the Gps chip .

This probably will work on the Xenon as the Xenon is very similar to the Arena. My daughter had the Xenon but I didn't try to hack it since I had to send it back for personal reasons . The tools and steps you will need are are all available on the LG Vu forum under java security bypass .
1. LG 3G Mobile Download program
2. LG EFS tool
3. USB cable
4. USb drivers

First before you do the Java security bypass you are gonna back up your original security policy (att.pol).Next do the java security bypass and install all the apps you want to access the GPS.Disconnect your phoine and reboot. You wont hace the GPS functionality until the final step but you can try to run all the apps that were installed as this step kinda gets the apps prepared .The last step is to just reverse the java security bypass by installing the original (att.pol) file .Disconnect and reboot your phone and all your apps you just installed should access the Gps. But I usually run the yellow pages app fiirst as this kinda wakes up the Gps chip and the other apps will access the Gps faster . Sorry for not posting all the instructions here ,but I was running short on time .

Bypassing the Java security will theoretically work since the Java security policy determines whether the application has access to the Location functions.

However, as another user posted, deleting the att.pol file does cause problems.

The LG EFS tool doesn't work for either of the two AT&T Xenons I have.

What's worse.  You can't put a file back on the Xenon.  So if you delete something, it's gone and you can't put it back.

I feel this will work for the Xenon .The Arena just came out for AT&T in March 2010 and it is locked down by AT & T than the Xenon is .I had problems running the EFS tool at first . But before you run the EFS tool, you got to run the LG 3 G mobile download program each time you wish to allow EFS to connect to the phone . I tried BITpim at first, but I didn't have any luck with it . I have both policies on my phone, but when I wish to use the java bypass ,I rename the original pol file to att.(origin)pol and change the hacked file to att.pol .When I am finished , I rename the hacked pol back to att.(hack)pol and change the original back to att.pol .So you never have to actually delete the att.pol file . Try running the LG 3 g mobile download program before using EFS and you should be able to connect .

Thanks, will give the LG Mobile 3G Download app a try.

BTW: What platform is the Arena based on?  Xenon is SEMC platform, so it's really Ericsson "guts"

Similar, but not similar enough, I'm afraid.

It appears to be a Qualcomm platform phone, which is much easier to hack than SEMC platform, it seems...

I tried LG MDP.  Realized I had tried this before, but tried it with a newer version just in case - makes no difference.  It can't even find the phone, I added ports manually but it can't download or even get IMEI.

Thanks anyway.

LG 3G Download doesn't connect to the Xenon/GR500.  The best you can do is get the correct USB driver, but you already have that if LG PC Suite II works.
