As most of you know, there is currently no known way to fully access the Xenon's filesystem to make modifications such as new skins, or alter the Java access policy (the thing that makes unsigned apps continually ask about network access)... YET.

I'm looking for a few brave souls to help break into the filesystem of the Xenon.

Requirements:
  • You are detail-oriented and can document and reproduce anything you do precisely so others can follow it
  • You know why the phone needs a driver and you already have it or know where to get it
  • You know the differences between Music SYnc, Mass Storage and Data Service modes, and where to change the setting
  • You have a computer that has USB or Bluetooth, preferrably both
  • (For Bluetooth) You know how to pair and connect to Bluetooth devices and what BT stack you're using
  • You know about other phone forums like HoFo and GsmH
  • You know what BitPim is and possibly even tried it
  • You consider yourself an expert in Google searching
  • You know what it means to "brick" a device and aren't afraid of bricking your phone
  • DOS and/or the command shell is your friend
  • You know how to remove the battery and SIM card of your phone
  • The Engineering menu makes your curious, not afraid

If any of the following apply to you, you should NOT volunteer:
  • You'll cry, be extremely upset, get grounded or otherwise be in big trouble if you render your phone inoperable, or otherwise break it
  • You have problems following instructions
  • You don't know the difference between forward slashes and backslashes
  • You don't know how to browsea filesystem without a GUI (or you don't know what filesystem or GUI means)
  • You use your phone for work or other critical tasks (partially overlaps the first point)
  • You don't have an LG Xenon phone
  • You don't know why we want to mess with a perfectly good phone
  • You cannot read and write English proficiently
  • You are unable or unwilling to share your contact details (email and possibly IM) with me
  • You are a glory-hungry (insert expletive) that just wants to take credit for everything, or have been accused of being one by more than one person in the past
  • You're one of those annoying types that's impatient and sends messages when they haven't heard anything for a day or two or loves to bump posts when there's no response.

So... who wants in?

Send me a PM with what operating systems you have access to, whether you have Bluetooth and what stack you're using, what model handset you have, who your carrier is, and why you want to embark on this crazy journey.

...if you reply to this thread instead of sending me a PM you're immediately disqualified under the second point of who should NOT volunteer!

Thanks for the vote of encouragement.  Volunteers don't have to be programmers, though being a programmer would help...

At this phase we're essentially looking a the Xenon has a "locked house" and poking and prodding at its different doors and windows to see how we can get in.

The Bluetooth door is open, but as soon as we walk in, we fall down a chute and into the "Other Files" closet that only leads back out.  We really want to get into the bedroom, kitchen, or somewhere else so we can explore the rest of the house.

Still looking for volunteers, and anyone familiar with the LG Chocolate KU580 or recent Sony-Ericsson phones.

So, just wondering if anyone has tried anything? I've got bluetooth and obex running on gentoo. No I don't use Bitpim, and there's probably a few other requirements of yours that I don't meet. Anyways, using obex it's quite easy to read the filesystem.

h4x0r bluetooth # obexftp -c ../ -m testrw -l
Scanning for (null) ...
Found: 00:24:83:3D:2E:EF
Browsing 00:24:83:3D:2E:EF ...
Connecting..\done
Tried to connect for 1196ms
Sending ".."...|done
Receiving "(null)".../<?xml version="1.0"?>
<!DOCTYPE folder-listing SYSTEM "obex-Folder-listing.dtd">
<folder-listing version="1.0">
<parent-folder />
<file name="RecMngr.bin" size="3145728" />
<file name="drm_bind_id.dat" size="16" />
<file name="VcuReg.bin" size="35596" />
<folder name="DM" />
<folder name="DRM" />
<folder name="Pso" />
<folder name="Pxo" />
<folder name="Media" />
<folder name="Obigo" />
<folder name="Modules" />
</folder_listing>

So far, I'm not having a lot of luck getting writeacess to work. I'm guessing the Media folder holds the "Other Files", "Videos",, "images", "sounds". perhaps I should copy every tree i find. It's quite a lengthy process, but it's working.

i think that it would be a good idea to ask for volunteers from other sites. like hackers that r willing to help out with the basics of programming. that is after all those doors r open. i am a current vu user with a hacked vu and i think that there is some impressive work being done at LG-VU.com
i will try to get some help from the administrators at that site. they have some pretty amazing hackers there that might help. i also think that there should be some sort of serious connection between these lg forums  Grin

Wouldn't be a bad idea. I've already demonstrated that filesystem access is easy, and it's not write-protected either. I started a placeholder thread on http://www.lg-xenon.com/lg-xenon-modifications/accessing-filesystem-using-bluetooth-and-obex/

You can write to the phone, yes... but the problem is, the phone intercepts all written files and moves them to the folder it "thinks" is best.

So, if it's a picture, it moves it to Pictures, etc.

Firmware-type files don't land where they need to - the phone moves them to Others or Other Files.

The "hack" some similar EMP-based phones use (overwriting the folders with files named Others and another one named Other Files so the phone can't move them) doesn't work - the phone still moves them.

So far still unable to write a file to a specific location in the phone filesystem.  That's the key.

BTW: I have a filesystem map for AT&T Xenon - PM me if you want it.
