I just grabbed a MicroUSB adapter from flea-bay to get audio out of the phone and onto something else ( stereo ). Sound still playing through phone speaker. The earbuds that ship with the phone auto-silence. Am I missing something or are all MicroUSB connectors NOT created equally?

I didn't think it really mattered, and I thought I had tried that already, but just to be thorough, I tried it again..none of the USB modes make a difference to how it works (or doesn't). My crappy LG earbuds work fine as soon as I plug them in - in any mode - the USB adapter and my headphones (or stereo, or mixer....) don't.

If I have a line to my mixer and I turn it up full blast I can hear a faint bit of audio only when I press the button on the blob in the middle of the cord, but no singal I'd call useable.

I realize now this may have been the wrong sub-forum to post this under...

The USB Connection mode shouldn't matter for audio, as that's not a data connection.

Standard Micro USB only defines power and data.  Audio over Micro USB utilizes some of the unused pins, and is largely not standardized.  Thus, a Motorola Micro USB audio adapter might not connect the right pins.  Someone in one of the other sub forums posted how they made their own adapter, I believe.
