If you tap the little arrow on the standby/home screen, the widget menu flies out.  You can touch and hold one of the items on the menu and drag it onto your screen.  For example, the yellow post-it drags onto your screen and looks like a blank, black post-it.  Tap it to reveal a "new" button that allows you to write yourself reminders on your phone's home screen.  You can drag these items back onto the widget menu when you no longer want them on your home screen.

Yup, like jbd5010 said, mostly you can just drag stuff onto your Standby/Idle/Home screen so they're there for easy reference.

Personally I only find the World Clock useful, though the Notes are good sometimes.

It's a nice way to tailor your phone's functionality to what you like to use.
