Hello all,

After going thru MANY threads, search forums feature and even tried to download the better manual (my McAfee scared me off this when it started flashing a RED warning stating dangerous download site, sorry I really do want to have it) I have yet found answer. I also need to add Im such a newbie to this phone/computer stuff.

Ok here goes..... I have the LG Xenon GR500 with AT&T, my dear ole hubby just recently purchased an IPhone and I believe he did so just to be able to track my whereabouts. Was able to get my hands on it for a sec or two and finally found his app section and low and behold he had Loopt on it, which I researched is a free app for iphones. Anyways, I did double check our AT&T bill/plan online and under their Loopt/Family Plan section both of our phones are checked marked "Blocked". I do think though that he is still able to track me somehow so I would like to know what on my end (in my phone) can I do to BLOCK this from happening? Anyway to turn off my GPS chip? I would think that he would have had to get into my phone somehow and turn something on, whether he has done this or not, I don't know.

Thank y'all so much for a quick response to my question. Getting tired and cross-eyed over all this, lol.

** I realized I probably should edit this so I don't sound too paranoid.... I have physically found a GPS tracking unit underneath my car's back bumper.  I took it off and told him next time I saw one on my car I was going to the local truck stop and putting it on a semi to Canada, haha! Needless to say there isn't one now, and he did wait cple mths before purchasing Iphone.  Which shocked and made me suspicious since he is most definitely a techno phoob. Iphones are a scarey thing for the likes of us, lol.

Megaupload is as safe as the files you download from it (in other words, it's no safer or more risky than accepting some unknown download from an unknown website) - the security scanner just like to target it because often times there are "fake" warez (pirated software) there that people download and they're really infected.

But since I wrote The Better Manual, I can tell you that what you're asking about isn't in it (yet). Smiley

There are essentially two ways to track a phone's location:
1. Wireless carrier triangulation and/or GPS "pull" (the carrier sends a command to the phone and the phone reports its position back).
2. Application running on the phone that writes a log or reports back somewhere.  Google Latitude is a good example of this.

#1 Does not require the phone user's permission, though it may requires some amount of legal action or law enforcement request.

#2 Does require user intervention.  The user needs to install the application and enable the location reporting.  In the case of Google Latitude, you can choose who to share your position with and it actually sends you a reminder email that you're sharing your position, because Google already has a case against it regarding sharing of information without user permission, so it's quite paranoid now.

I don't mean to pry, but it seems you might need to talk to your husband about why he's trying to track you without your knowledge or permission.  There are stories of different devices "appearing" on peoples' vehicles, and there are different places these devices can be placed.

As to your original question of whether you can turn off the GPS chip or otherwise disable it, I think you can turn off the GPS in the Engineering menu.

I trust my wife and I let Google Latitude report my position, for no particular reason, actually, since she rarely even looks.  As for whether she shares her position with me, I leave that entirely up to her.  I'm not the suspicious type, I guess.  Paranoid worrier, yes.  Suspicious, not so much.

To be honest, because the Xenon isn't as capable as the iPhone, I wouldn't worry too much about him having an iPhone.  Now if he gave you an iPhone, then it'd be more likely that he had hidden some kind of tracking software in it.

With the current state of Xenon hacking, there's no way I know of to run an application on the Xenon without it showing up in the Task Menu (hold down the middle multi-task button) unless it's a widget that sits on the home screen, but no custom widgets have appeared yet.

You have the "dumber" phone, so in the tracking and installing hidden software respect, you're actually safer. Smiley

Hi Brandon, Thankyou so much for your response!

Megaupload is as safe as the files you download from it.......
Is this the site that McAfee freaked out about?  Scared me half to death, lol.  I DESPERATELY need this manual of yours.  The one supplied with the phone confuses me and kinda skimpy on the info. After I type this reply will do it then.  Also just by reading through so many threads in past cple days I realize I don't have a clue about half the lingo you guys use and probably have only utilized 1/4 of stuff that xenon has to offer.... and Ive had this phone since May '09!  lol  I'm particularly interested in free stuff that can kill time at doctors office... haha! I'm also realizing now that even though the little box is unchecked Im not seeing any "smilies", only the words.... like cheesy.  And Ive been wondering if that was some type of new terminology that was being used now days, since Ive been constantly seeing it throughout posts.  LOL

Yes I am aware of this way.  In fact I believe my old Razor phone had the capability of switching to emergency tracking only.  So was thinking this would be an option on the Xenon as well.

This is something that I knew he would have to get his hands on my phone and do... and very possible he could have done so and used his own email address or something? I don't remember seeing this logo on his app screen but since it seems kinda similar to regular google logo I could have just dismissed it.  I did however see the Loopt logo and although I dont know for sure Im assuming he downloaded it, that it didnt come standard on his iphone from AT&T?  Might want to swing by AT&T store and ask 'em, huh?  lol

No problem and I should probably explain somethings... but I'm afraid this  isn't the right forum to do that, lol.  Live/reality soap site/forum would be more appropriate, lol. As for different devices showing up... yes this was one of his that he placed under my car.... cuz I got a cple ole tricks up my sleeve and figured out what program/site was being used to monitor the device.   Wink

Will be looking for that menu when I get my hands on your manual, lol.

Awww, very nice guy then!  Hhmmm, so the Xenon is able to download Latitude to it?  I went the their website, along with Loopt site and both say they only support smart phones.  I wouldn't mind having a mapping feature that I didn't have to pay a monthly fee for.  Although I might outta be careful and not make his job any easier by already having said program/app on my phone, lol. So if Im understanding you right the iphone supports both Latitude and Loopt BUT the Xenon only supports Latitude?  Well unless you actually sign up for the ATT family map plan and that utilizes Loopt I believe.  WOW, Im not making any sense now, sorry.

Well of course there is the AT&T Navigator icon.  And when I hit the button/screen it asks if I want to start my free 30day trial.  I just hit the exit button then.  Hhmmm wondering if he's trying to utilize this free trial somehow... after getting hands on my phone.  I keep it locked now.  If I dont forget, lol.

LOLLLLL...... well I really dont need all that stuff that's on an iphone.  I don't work and Im around either my desktop, netbook or unlimited data plan on Xenon all the time AND since Im around the first two so much Ive never really used the web/internet portion of my phone.

Anywayyssss, thanks again for your help/advice.  Gonna try your download again, now. Wow, looks like Ive just written a screenplay for tv mini-series here.  Yikes, sorry it's so long.

Life is complicated, I get it (probably a little more than I'd like, actually)...

As far as I am aware, the Xenon does not support Latitude, so you're good there.
It supports Google Maps, but it's the Java edition and without modifying your phone's policy, getting the signed Google Maps (possible, but requires multiple attempts), or "dev signing" the Google Maps app yourself, it'll prompt you for every network access.  If you get a signed version it'll ask you once per session, per type of access (this means you might get 2-3 prompts per session, depending on what kind of access the program uses).

In fact, the default Java signing policy of the Xenon helps you - it doesn't allow GPS access to applications that aren't signed by AT&T (presumably only AT&T apps, possibly those sold through AT&T MEdia Mall).  Third-party signed applications (like those you'd download and install from GetJAR.com for example), only have limited access.  Unsigned applications only have HTTP access and it's annoyingly limited.

As for AT&T Navigator, AFAIK it is only GPS navigation and doesn't report your position back, though I suppose someone might be able to discern your location by looking at what map information was retrieved - but you'd need access to AT&T's server for that.  Again, it's a user-initiated action, not something that runs in the background.

If you want to be extra sure that your phone isn't reporting something, at least via Internet (data) access, you can set up a "no access" Internet profile.  It'll stop general Internet data traffic, but won't stop something that's hidden by AT&T or LG, or something that uses another communication method like SMS.

Hope that helps!

If you were a honest wife you would not be afraid of being tracked. Only someone who has something to hide would be freaked out.

Why so afraid?

Haven't you seen Enemy of the State?

In all seriousness though, regardless of the reasons behind, it's a legitimate question.
