Pull out the memory card and connect the USB. If you're lucky, your phone is in USB Mass Storage mode and its contents will be accessible via computer.
You could also try Bluetooth FTP.
There are two parts to the touch screen - the touch mechanics, and the display mechanics.
Sounds like jkd's phone's screen is broken. I had the same issue with my phone after a nasty drop. The touch screen still worked, it was just difficult to use since parts of the screen weren't visible.
