I have two Xenon's in my AT&T Family Plan (neither of which is my phone). My daughter's in particular has LOUSY reception in her dorm at college. Both of the Xenon's have HORRIBLE battery life. Neither has a data plan. I noticed that both Xenon's have the original software version (10f) and I'm hoping the latest (10o) might help with the reception or battery life. However, as sympathetic AT&T wants me to believe they are, I can't get them to help me get the latest software version.

I'd like to know what I can do to update the software. I've read every forum post I can find on this, but nobody has said what the steps would be. I have a cable to connect the phone to the PC and I have a Micro SD card in each phone. Can someone tell me where to get the files I need and how to update the phone? By the way, LG basically tells me to talk to AT&T and AT&T tells me to talk to LG.

I have already used instructions here to block internet access (thank you bhiga, et al). I tried to turn off 3G, but it comes back every time the phone is powered off and on. I'm also hoping the 10o version of the software will make this sticky.

I know I'm pinning a lot of hopes on the software, but a guy has to dream. Shoot me down gently.

So, what do I do? Thanks.

P.S. I posted this last week on Howard Forums with no response there.  I hope Brandon or someone might answer here--it seems like a more appropriate forum.

For the Xenon, you need neither the cable nor MicroSD card.  Firmware updates are done over the air (OTA).

Get to an area with good signal and plug the phone into the charger (to ensure you have power, because you don't want to run out of power during a firmware update - it might "brick" the phone)

Then go to:
Top Menu > Settings > More > Software Update

It should say "Contacting AT&T Server" or something like that, then either tell you "Could not contact DM server" (this means try again later and/or in a different location) or ask you, "Update found. Update now?"

The 1.0o update is dated May 2010, so it should go to any AT&T Xenon that has earlier firmware at this point.

Brandon  (do I say @bhiga??)--

I've tried that till I'm blue in the face.  I've tried myself over the course of a few months and I've called both AT&T and LG for help.  Of course, I can't be positive that I tried it in a stellar coverage area, but I can't believe that is my problem.  I will be near the AT&T/Cingular headquarters early next week and I will try again there.  I just used the excellent instructions to turn off internet access, so I'm not sure I can do the software update check without resetting that--correct?

I really appreciate your answer.  I'm hoping you might have some other ideas.

One more Xenon question.  One of my two Xenons seems to work better than the other.  Do you know of any kind of performance test so I can check?  I can also visit a company-owned store if they have something.  I've never heard of such a test, but I figure if there is one, someone on this forum would know.  (If this was a burning issue for me, I'd post a new thread, but I'm just wondering.)
