I have the Vu right now, and Google Maps only works with enough effort (data cable, BitPim, etc.), but I'm wondering if the XENON makes it easy to install GMAIL and GOOGLE MAPS. To me, the accessibility of installing or using these (and other) apps is a HUGE deciding factor on whether I should get the Xenon.

So....Does anybody know if Google Maps works on it?

O sweet! But since the Xenon has GPS, does it show where your location is? Like within a one mile radius?

Here's my experience with apps so far.  I had an Eternity and while overall I like this phone better, the Eternity ran all of these with no problem.

To start off with, I have yet to find a fix for the unsigned problem and fullscreen issue.  However, I am hoping this gets resolved as more people get the phone.

Google maps - installs ok and you can get the signed version after several tries.  However, it gives you the non touchscreen version w/o location finder.  The vu version works to fix the touchscreen issue but still no location.  The google site sent my Eternity the latest version automatically.  BTW, google maps uses triangulation not the GPS.  att locks it out except for their Nav.

Gmail - Installs but doesn't refresh.  Not a big deal since its accessible through a browser.

Opera mini - Works fine just not signed or fullscreen.

M.moodio.fm - causes a system reboot.  I used this frequently on my eternity so i am trying to find an alternitive.

Well at least it works. And I heard about the GPS  thing, AT&T hogs everything. But moodio.fm? I use that now, and its amazing, but Im sure there's several alternatives. I'm hoping the Xenon will get enough attention to start opening it up to several apps, games, and other tweaks that will be useful. That's my state right now: positive and hopeful.

The poster above was correct about the yellowpages app making use of the GPS.  I haven't played with it too much but might make a good alternative to google maps.

yea, I was really bummed to find out that I couldn't use the GPS or touchscreen in Google Maps. Maybe there will be a new version that will support the full touch screen and GPS in the future.

As for a replacement app, the Yellowpages app works well for getting directions when you don't know where you are, but it seems to lack the performance and features of Maps.

And to get the Gmail app to refresh you have to completely log off of the app and then log in again. Its easier to just use the browser.

Actually, I found a way to refresh gmail without exiting.  Hit the "num" button and then press "0" or just press "0" on the keyboard.

Still would like a signed fullscreen version of Opera 4.2 and touchscreen location gmap for this phone.

Ok so I'm no expert at this type of stuff but I was able to get enough info together to make a .jad file to make Opera Mini full screen, I edited or added the following to the .jad file, I'm not sure if all of the below code is needed or not but it works great! You can uninstall the old version of Opera, all of the menus work.
If someone who knows a little more about this stuff can edit Google Maps, and GMail that would be awesome!

MIDlet-Touch-Support: True
UseNativeTextButtons: false
ReverseSoftkeys: false
UseNativeCommands: false
LGE-MIDlet-TargetLCD-Height: 400
LGE-MIDlet-TargetLCD-Width: 240
LGE-MIDlet-Height: 400
LGE-MIDlet-Width: 240
MIDlet-Touch-Support: true
Navi-Key-Hidden: true

* OperaMini.jad (6.1 KB - downloaded 59 times.)

Ok so I got Google Maps now too. Let me know how these work. If someone can figure out how to make these signed that would be great, since Google maps asks CONSTANTLY about data.

-edit- It looks like the signed jad for my eternity works if I edit it to be full screen for the Xenon, I have attached it too, so far it only asks once but still no my location button like I get on my eternity. You only need one of the below files, I would recommend the Googlemaps.jad, so far I have found no problems with it and it is signed.. just copy it to your phone, browse to it in other files, and run.

* gmaps-232FullScreen.jar (436.27 KB - downloaded 51 times.)
* GoogleMaps.jad (2.75 KB - downloaded 75 times.)

I posted instructions to make GMail, Opera Mini and Google Maps fullscreen in Landscape.

Works better in landscape because the arrow keys face the correct directions.

They're in the Tips section.
