So, I've googled and apparently this a common thing for the xenon and i'm pretty pissed off by it. My phone has been acting odd for about 2 weeks. It started out just randomly pushing the wrong button from what I actually pushed. Like I would push the message button and it would bring up the menu or if I clicked to read a message, it would hit ignore. It was annoying, but it came and went so it wasn't too awful. But two days ago, the touch screen just stopped working all together. It brings up the main screen and I can use the send and end buttons as well as the QWERTY keyboard to make phone calls so it's strickly the screen part. Also, the date and time have mysteriously changed themselves to January 1st, 2009. Which is weird, since I didn't even get the phone til June 09'. I'm just pretty irritated and i'm hoping maybe someone else has found a solution to this problem that doesn't involve me wasting a lot of money for nothing. I'm thinking maybe it's the battery? but it still charges and the battery holds a charge so I have no idea what it is. I have no warranty on it, since it's been over a year and i'm not due for an upgrade yet. Blehhh. Help!

Sounds like it's a hardware issue.  The date reset points to something more though.  Did it just lose the date/time or did it lose other stuff from phone memory too?

Has it gotten wet or dropped recently?

It's possible that somehow the touchscreen calibration got nuked along with the date/time.  Does it vibrate when you tap the screen?  If so, then at least it's still recognizing input, but I'm not sure how you'd get back to the touchscreen calibration short of pulling the battery until it completely loses its memory, if it does.

If you have any screen protector, shell or case around the phone, try removing it.  Pressure on the edges of the screen can sometimes cause phantom input.

Beyond that, I'd try a phone repair shop.  It might be something as simple as a loose/bad cable.

Just the date and time that i'm aware of. It hasn't gotten wet though I must confess, I drop my phones all the time. I've never dropped it from a very far distance though and I didn't know dropping a phone could cause the touchscreen to go out. Thats weird, because there is no damage to the phone, barely any scratches. I'm due for an upgrade soon though, i'm just going to get an iphone and protective cover this time around.

There are many tiny connectors and such inside modern cell phones - a drop at the right angle with the right amount of force (doesn't need to be a lot) can make the connector pop off or come loose.

Most likely that is what happened.

Having a shell or bumper for the phone will reduce the amount of shock, but it's like glass - if you just happen to get it just right, it'll still break.

We got 3 Xenons last December.  The touch screen on one stopped responding in July, while on vacation.  Never dropped or got wet.  Another phone had similar problems this week.  The upper half of the touch screen stopped responding.  Instead, the closest button on the lower half would respond.  Today nothing worked.  ATT is sending a replacement.  The first replacement is still working.  Oddly, of the 3 original phones, the longest lasting is the one most abused.  I love the full keyboard, but there are serious problems with the touch screen.  I only hope we can make it through the next 14 months with these clunkers.  Full keyboard: YES.  Touch screen: NEVER AGAIN!

Funny how things are like that.  Seems the early-production ones are better than the later-production ones.

I remember a friend in the video industry explained it to me once citing Sony as an example.  The first generation products are over-engineered, because they're not quite sure of the tolerances and don't want a product that breaks on launch.

But once the product is established, they start optimizing - removing components, getting cheaper components, etc.  So sometimes getting the first-generation model you get better capabilities and a more solid product.

But of course this doesn't apply to everything.
